DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Des Moines police have elevated their investigation into a weekend assault after a 50-year-old man succumbed to injuries he sustained in the attack.

The Des Moines Police Department says Andrew Purcell died Monday, prompting police to now classify the case as homicide.

Officers responded around 12:50 a.m. Sunday to reports of an unconscious man outside a Des Moines bar and found Purcell on the ground. He was transported to Mercy Hospital with serious injuries.

Police say they believe the suspect in the case is a man in his late 20s with dark hair and a beard. The man, accompanied by a female in a pink sweater, was last seen leaving the area in a red pickup truck.
