HONOLULU (AP) - Relatives of an 81-year-old Wahiawa man who died after being struck by a car on Oahu say he loved to walk every morning and afternoon.

Family members say Jose Malapit was headed to his nearby home when he was struck by a Nissan sedan Sunday afternoon near California Avenue and North Cane Street in Wahiawa.

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser newspaper (https://is.gd/DGCg5w) reports police said the 24-year-old Nissan driver suffered a “medical episode” and lost control of the vehicle, which struck a van leaving a parking lot.

Authorities say the Nissan then struck the elderly pedestrian.

Malapit was taken to a hospital and died late Sunday afternoon. The death has been classified as accidental.

The drivers of the two vehicles were not hurt.
