BOISE, Idaho (AP) - Fines for violating Idaho’s open meeting rules may soon be getting an increase.

The Idaho House voted 60-9 on Tuesday to advance the second version of a bill that would hike penalties for violating the open meeting laws.

The basic violation will increase fivefold - from $50 to $250. More severe violations could reach $2,500.

The price tags haven’t been changed in more than 40 years.

Republican Rep. Linden Bateman from Idaho Falls, who is sponsoring the bill, says the fee changes aim to keep pace with inflation.

This is Bateman’s third try to pass the increase. A previous attempt had passed both chambers overwhelmingly, but the bill died because of a technical error in an amendment.

The bill now goes to the Senate for approval.
