WILMINGTON, N.C. (AP) - Inspectors are beginning their work on the Interstate 40 bridges over the Northeast Cape Fear River, meaning the right lane will be closed in both directions.

A statement from NCDOT says the closures will take place between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. every day until Friday.

Contract inspectors with the NCDOT Bridge Maintenance Department will be performing the biannual inspection on the bridges. The left lanes of traffic will remain open at all times in both directions.

Although there will not be any detours for the inspection work, motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes to avoid work crews and possible congestion.

Regular inspections help the department identify whether a bridge needs maintenance and repair. If inspectors find a safety concern, the bridge will either be repaired or closed immediately.
