NEWRAK, N.J. (AP) - A Jersey City fire inspector who accepted bribes to help houses of prostitution stay in business is now headed to prison.

Federal prosecutors say 56-year-old Phillip Procaccino, of Belleville, was sentenced Tuesday to one year and one day in prison. He also will have to serve a year of supervised release once he’s freed

Procaccino pleaded guilty last November to attempting to obstruct, delay and affect interstate commerce by extortion under color of official right. He admitted accepting $2,500 in October 2013 to help a massage parlor that operated as a prostitution business to obtain a certificate of occupancy.

Prosecutors say Procaccino also agreed to take 10 percent of another prostitution business’ profits for the certificate of occupancy.

In both cases, he agreed to tip owners off about impending inspections.
