OCEAN SPRINGS, Miss. (AP) - Andre Kaufman has stepped down as public works director in Ocean Springs, but will remain as a project manager until he retires June 30.

According to local media reports, the agreement was announced Monday night after a closed door meeting of the board of aldermen and Mayor Connie Moran.

Alderman Jerry Dalgo says Assistant Director Johnny Groue will take over as the interim public works director. Kaufman will oversee the seven projects already underway by the department.

The 66-year-old Kaufman was placed on paid suspension by Moran on March 27.

The State Auditor’s Office has been conducting an investigation of Kaufman and his department for the past 18 months. District Attorney Tony Lawrence says no formal prosecution documents had been turned over to his office.
