WASHINGTON (AP) - The Kennedy Center’s musical revival “Side Show” has tied for top musical honors in Washington theater with Signature Theatre’s “Sunday in the Park with George.”

The Helen Hayes Awards were announced Monday night. “Side Show” also won outstanding ensemble in a musical and for outstanding costume design. The show moved to Broadway but had a short run. Signature’s production also won three other awards.

The Kennedy Center’s new musical “Little Dancer” also won for Susan Stroman’s outstanding choreography. “Little Dancer” was inspired by the famous sculpture “Little Dancer Aged Fourteen” at the National Gallery of Art.

This is the first year the awards were split into two camps - those with more than half the cast being members of the Actors’ Equity union and those with non-union casts.
