SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A Salt Lake City man convicted in the shooting death of a teenage boy has been sentenced to life in prison without parole.

Judge Robin Reese handed down the maximum sentence Monday to 33-year-old Frank Reyos. Prosecutors said he killed 16-year-old Kenyatta Winston with a single bullet to the back of the head in 2012 as retribution after Winston left him behind during a gunfight with gang members the day before.

Reyos had asked not to be present during the sentencing, but the judge denied the request and an appeals court upheld the decision.

The teen’s family members asked the judge for a heavy sentence.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports (https://bit.ly/1IGivhx) that Reyos is expected to appeal his conviction. He did not speak Monday, but attorney Denise Porter expressed sorrow on his behalf.
