MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) - A Long Island man has admitted he was drunk when he crashed his car and killed his lifelong friend.

Brian Friedrichs, of Levittown, told a judge Monday that he didn’t remember much about the July 2014 incident. But he said he did remember that the crash killed his best friend.

Newsday (https://nwsdy.li/1CPEst6 ) says he pleaded guilty to manslaughter and drunken-driving charges on Monday.

The crash occurred in Westbury on the Northern State Parkway. Police say Friedrichs lost control of the car while speeding; both men were ejected from the car.

The judge said he would sentence him to four to 12 years in prison on May 18.

Friedrich’s attorney says his client will be placed in a jail program where he will work with others with substance abuse problems.
