PHOENIX (AP) - Authorities say a man spotted carrying a rifle while walking along Interstate 17 in north Phoenix has been taken to a hospital for evaluation.

Arizona Department of Public Safety officers kept traffic away from the man until he was removed from the freeway Tuesday morning.

DPS Officer Tim Case says the man was transported to a hospital after being taken into custody without incident.

Case says DPS has the rifle.

It isn’t known if the rifle was loaded, but there was no indication the man fired the rifle or pointed it at anyone while he was on the freeway
