NEW ORLEANS (AP) - City officials say the French Quarter will be a cleaner place once new trash cans - which run on solar power and compact trash - are installed on the streets around the busy tourist district, where trash piles up fast.

The city hopes the trash cans will cut down on collection times, leave less litter escaping onto the streets and improve overall trash collection.

Mayor Mitch Landrieu says they will make the streets cleaner.

The trash can-compactors are part of a 2014 contract the city signed with Waste Management of Louisiana LLC. to provide and install 246 BigBelly solar trash compactors.

The new trash compactors will replace existing black wrought iron cans now on the streets in the Quarter. The new cans will be bigger and boxy in shape.
