McKINNEY, Texas (AP) - A Texas 17-year-old faces weapons and tampering charges after a 14-year-old friend fatally shot himself with a gun that police say was provided by the suspect.

Jordan Sharifi is charged as an adult with evidence tampering, theft of a firearm and making a firearm accessible to a child.

A McKinney police affidavit says Sharifi told officers he gave the stolen gun to Raymond Howell Jr. for protection against bullies.

Collin County jail records show Sharifi was being held Tuesday on $300,000 bond. The records didn’t list an attorney who could be contacted to comment on the charges.

The affidavit says Sharifi discovered the body and gun last Thursday near a ditch, then hid the weapon nearby.

Authorities initially investigated the death as a homicide before interviewing the suspect, recovering the gun and determining the 14-year-old took his own life.
