PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - The National Pork Board wants to celebrate a pig farmer who uses ethical standards in raising swine with the America’s Pig Farmer of the Year award.

The board is encouraging pig farmers to apply for the award by May 17.

National Pork Board Vice President Brad Greenway is a pig farmer from Mitchell. He says high-quality candidates will use environmentally friendly practices and focus on the welfare of their pigs.

The board wants accountability and transparency on farms to build consumer trust.

Judges for the award include Chris Soules, an Iowa farmer who has been seen on “The Bachelor” and “Dancing With The Stars.”

The official winner will be announced in October during National Pork Month.
