ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - Alaska State Troopers are investigating the death of a person whose remains were found in a burned vehicle on the Parks Highway.

Troopers say a motorist reported the car wreckage was engulfed in flames Monday morning at mile 352 of the highway, outside Fairbanks.

Responders put out the fire and found the remains of the driver in the passenger compartment of the Buick Century.

Troopers say the driver was not wearing a seatbelt.

Troopers say the vehicle had been northbound on the highway when the driver lost control and veered off the road into a steep embankment.

According to troopers, it’s unknown how the fire began.

Troopers say the state medical examiner’s office will conduct an autopsy and determine a positive identification for the driver.
