PHOENIX (AP) - Four Maricopa County detention officers have been injured after being attacked by an inmate at a jail mental health unit.

County Sheriff Joe Arpaio says the attack occurred Wednesday morning and one of the detention officers suffered serious injuries.

Arpaio says 44-year-old Scott Beatty suffered broken facial bones and bleeding on the brain.

The 15-year veteran remains hospitalized in intensive care and he’s scheduled for reconstructive surgery.

Arpaio says an 18-year-old inmate in the Lower Buckeye Jail mental health unit assaulted the officers.

The inmate was in an unauthorized area of the housing pod and was told to return to his cell when he began striking the officers.

They used a stun gun on the inmate several times, but the minimum-security psych inmate wasn’t stopped until other officers arrived.
