EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - On a training exercise, a Eugene-Springfield Fire Department rescue boat had to be rescued itself after hitting a submerged log on the McKenzie River and taking on water.

The Register-Guard reports (https://is.gd/45Gagb ) that a second rescue boat was dispatched to dislodge the first boat.

It succeeded. But on the way back to the launch ramp, both boats took on water and had to be abandoned.

One boat was quickly recovered. The other was left overnight and recovered Tuesday morning

All crew members made it to shore safely. Both vessels suffered minor damage.

Officials promised a full review and said the lessons learned will be communicated to the fire department and the public.
