ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) - Imagine a space settlement that 20,000 people can live on.

It’s simple, functional and efficient, and it’ll only take 20 years and billions of dollars to build.

That’s the design Greenhills School senior Alex Reeves submitted for an international contest through NASA and the National Space Society, according to The Ann Arbor News ( https://bit.ly/1CBaado ).

Reeves earned the top prize in the 2015 Ames Space Settlement Design Contest for his “The Freyr Project” space settlement, which he created during approximately 400 hours of work in the fall and winter.

The contest is run by NASA’s Ames Research Center, San Jose State University and the National Space Society.

Tying for first place among eighth-grade students is a team from Honey Creek Community School for their project, “Zeal.” The charter school’s team included Justin Alexander, Patrick Quinn, Ethan Reed, Vyron Reynolds and Zuvuya Talley.

Reeves won $5,000 and will present his paper to the National Space Society’s 34rd annual International Space Development Conference in May in Toronto.

His 247-page design beat more than 1,000 entries from more than 3,000 students from 21 countries.

The space settlement is named for the Norse god of fertility, sunlight, rain and peace.

“Freyr is designed to be a simple, yet functional, design that provides the services necessary of a space settlement without becoming extravagantly expensive or overly fancy,” Reeves wrote. “It is not a working camp or scientific outpost, but it is not a hotel either. Freyr is a place used by thousands of people every day and a hub of inter-orbital and interplanetary travel, and as such, it is functional in the extreme.”

His designs include a timeline for 20 years of construction and 50 years of operation addressing food, recreation, government, transportation, power, sustainability and materials. Most of the technology in the space settlement exists now, he said.

After graduation, Reeves plans to study aerospace or mechanical engineering in college, and hopes to work in the space industry after college.
