DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Authorities have determined the death of a veteran found dead in a Des Moines park was a suicide.

Polk County Medical Examiner Dr. Gregory Schmunk said Wednesday the death of 41-year-old Richard Miles has been ruled a suicide. He was found frozen Feb. 20 at Water Works Park.

The Des Moines Register reports (https://dmreg.co/1yWkEjV ) Schmunk and another pathologist found the direct cause of death was hypothermia. The suicide ruling negates the possibility that the death could have been an accident.

Miles’ death prompted U.S. Sen. Joni Ernst to call for a federal investigation into the programs provided at the VA Central Iowa Health Systems. Ernst says the review aims to examine treatment provided to Miles to determine any systematic problems and ensure quality access to mental health care for veterans.
