LEWISTON, Maine (AP) - Bates College women’s basketball coach Jim Murphy has announced that he is retiring after 21 years, 343 victories and six NCAA Division III tournament appearances.

The Lewiston college announced Tuesday that Murphy will step down effective the end of this academic year.

Bates athletic director Kevin McHugh said in a statement that Murphy had “an amazing work ethic and a passion for excellence.”

Murphy led the Bobcats to a 343-187 record, including a No. 1 national ranking in the 2004-2005 season and an appearance in the Sweet Sixteen.

He also coached women’s soccer for 16 years, compiling a 146-93-13 record and three NCAA tournament appearances.

Murphy is a 1969 Bates graduate and former football quarterback who still holds school records for touchdown passes in a career (50) and season (17).
