LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Arkansas-Little Rock has announced the hiring of former Angelo State coach Chris Beard as the school’s new men’s basketball coach.

Beard was 47-17 the last two seasons at Division II Angelo State, including winning 28 games last season. He replaces Steve Shields, who was fired last month after 12 seasons as the Trojans’ head coach - during which time he was 192-178.

UALR was 13-18 last season, including 8-12 in the Sun Belt Conference.

Prior to Angelo State, Beard was the head coach at McMurry University for two seasons. He also coached for the ABA’s South Carolina Warriors and spent 10 seasons as an assistant coach at Texas Tech, including seven under former coach Bobby Knight.
