DAYTON, Ohio (AP) - Color guards, indoor percussion teams and indoor marching bands from around the world will compete in world championship events scheduled in southwest Ohio over the next two weekends.

The Winter Guard International championships will be held at various universities beginning Thursday with events at sites including Miami University, Xavier University, Wright State University and the University of Dayton. Finals will be held at the University of Dayton Arena on April 12 and April 18.

The nonprofit Dayton-based organization says more than 36,000 competitors participated regionally and more than 12,000 in the championships in 2014.

Participants from high schools and some independent groups come from all over the United States to compete. Contestants also include competitors from various countries including Canada, Sweden, Japan, Thailand and the Netherlands.
