HERNANDO, Miss. (AP) - Employees in the DeSoto County school system will have to make up days missed because of bad weather.

Students are not being required to make up the missed days.

The Commercial Appeal reports (https://bit.ly/1y3JhQs) the state attorney general’s office has issued an opinion that employees must make up days missed because of bad weather in February and March because state workers cannot be paid for days not worked.

Superintendent Milton Kuykendall told school board members Tuesday that a plan on how to make up the lost time will be presented to board members for approval. Kuykendall said the plan probably will involve professional development days that employees can attend.

“We’ll do what we need to do to comply with state law,” he said.

Like other districts throughout Mississippi, the DeSoto schools missed multiple days because of ice and snow during February and March. One day was made up on a Saturday, and district officials had scheduled other makeup days on Saturdays and by adding a day at the end of the school year.

Before making up any of the remaining days, however, the district received word from the state that it had been exempted from making up the days for students, but the decision did not address whether employees would have to make them up.

Kuykendall said teachers and certified employees will have to attend the development days under whatever plan is ultimately approved by board members. Attendance will be optional for hourly employees, but they won’t get paid if they do not attend, he said.
