MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) - Lawyers for the family of a South Florida man fatally shot by a police officer have released dash camera video showing part of the confrontation.

The family of 25-year-old Lavall Hall, who was mentally ill, says there was no reason for the Miami Gardens police officer to shoot him during a February confrontation. Hall’s mother had called police because her son was having a violent episode, and she was hoping he could get help.

Authorities have said Hall was shot because he repeatedly swung a metal broom at them and refused commands to stop. The police dash camera video released Wednesday shows Hall carrying the broom and later Officer Eddy Trimino firing the fatal shots, with Hall off camera at that point.

Prosecutors are investigating the shooting.
