HAMMOND, La. (AP) - The Hammond City Council will soon consider passing a city-wide smoking ban for workplaces and public places.

At present, the city has no smoking policies but has banned smoking in city buildings and parks. It is at the discretion of business owners if they will allow smoking on their property.

Mayor Pete Panepinto tells The Daily Star (https://bit.ly/1H4oNsT) he supports the smoking ban.

The public hearing for the proposed ordinance will be April 21.

Cheryl Klein of the Louisiana Healthy Communities Coalition and the Campaign for Tobacco Free Living said that people should realize that while most people can escape secondhand smoke by leaving an area where people are smoking, employees who work in places where people smoke are constantly exposed.
