SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - A Northern California jail inmate who escaped from custody last month has been arrested in Mississippi.

KNTV in San Jose reports (https://bit.ly/1E4XQV1 ) the U.S. Marshals in Mississippi arrested 40-year-old Johnell Carter Tuesday, according to the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office.

Police had been searching for Carter since he escaped on March 6, shortly after fighting with a deputy while undergoing treatment for an illness at a San Francisco Bay Area medical center. The deputy was not seriously injured.

Authorities say Carter was in jail in Santa Clara County on charges of child molestation.

After his escape, dozens of sheriff’s deputies, three police dogs, and several helicopters assisted the California Highway Patrol and San Jose police with the search.

Late last month, Santa Clara County sheriff’s deputies arrested Carter’s brother, Joseph Carter in Northern California for assisting him with the escape.
