NEW YORK (AP) - Prosecutors in New York City say a woman charged with murder in the death of her 20-month-old son told an emergency responder the devil made her “put him to sleep.”

Manhattan prosecutors arraigned Latisha Fisher Wednesday via video hook-up from a correctional hospital.

She didn’t enter a plea and her lawyer didn’t immediately return a message seeking comment.

Authorities say the 35-year-old woman locked herself inside a Manhattan restaurant’s bathroom for 25 minutes on March 30 with her child, Gavriel Ortiz-Fisher.

They say a restaurant worker opened up the door after customers became concerned and found Fisher cradling the unresponsive child.

Court papers say Fisher demonstrated to a responding emergency medical worker how she put the child to sleep by cupping her hands in “a smothering gesture.”
