KINSTON, N.C. (AP) - Authorities in Kinston have charged the parents of a 5-month-old boy with felony child abuse after the child died.

Multiple media outlets report Coty James Potter and Heather Brinkley both face one count of felony negligent child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury. The 22-year-olds were scheduled to appear Wednesday in Lenoir County District Court.

Kinston police say officers and emergency personnel responded to a call of an unresponsive infant. Austin James Potter died at Lenoir Memorial Hospital despite efforts to resuscitate him.

The two are being held under $1 million bonds at the Lenoir County jail. Police say additional charges are expected after the outcome of the infant’s autopsy. It’s not known if Potter and Brinkley have attorneys.
