SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) - The Sioux Falls City Council has approved a six-month moratorium on billboards while it re-examines sign rules.

A voter-approved zoning ordinance adopted last year opened the door for billboards on virtually any commercial property, including business lots near residential areas. That has prompted some complaints from people who don’t want billboards in their neighborhoods.

City officials plan to work on solutions that will appease those homeowners and still be acceptable to advertisers.

The moratorium takes effect Saturday. Planned billboards that already have been permitted will be allowed during the six-month freeze.
