SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (AP) - A trial is underway for a 39-year-old upstate New York man who was charged with killing the newborn child authorities say he fathered with an underage girl.

A city of Schenectady police detective testified Tuesday that the investigation began after Herman Robinson attempted to kill himself in December 2013 and left behind a note that confessed to rape and a possible homicide.

The note resulted in Robinson being charged in early 2014 with repeatedly raping a girl starting when she was 11. He was also charged with second-degree murder.

Authorities say the girl told police she gave birth to Robinson’s baby at a home in Schenectady in March 2010 and that Robinson then killed the infant.

The baby’s body was never found.

Testimony in the bench trial continues Wednesday.
