SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (AP) - The adopted upstate New York hometown of one of the greatest scientists of the 20th century is celebrating the 150th anniversary of his birth in Europe.

The birthday celebration for Charles Steinmetz is being held Thursday at Edison Tech Center, an interactive learning facility in downtown Schenectady. The center is hosting a daylong series of events marking Steinmetz’s birth in Germany on April 9, 1865.

Steinmetz helped place Schenectady on the forefront of technological advances more than 100 years ago. By the early 1900s he was the chief consultant engineer at General Electric in Schenectady, leading the company’s industrial research laboratory.

Edison Tech Center President Craig Cantello says Steinmetz still found time to get involved in community organizations in Schenectady, where he was buried after his death in 1923.
