RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) - A jury has convicted a woman of 17 counts of misdemeanor animal cruelty, more than three years after her malnourished horses were seized from her Riverside County property.

The Press-Enterprise newspaper reports (https://bit.ly/1H7xjXX ) 49-year-old Janice Susan Deutsch is scheduled for sentencing Thursday.

Animal control officials said the horses on the 5-acre property near Murrieta were severely underweight and that Deutsch failed to feed the horses properly.

Deutsch blamed the weight loss on illness. The animals recovered and were offered for adoption.

The newspaper says Deutsch has been in custody in connection with a separate criminal case involving elder abuse against her then-86-year-old mother. She was sentenced last year to seven years in prison.
