SEMPRONIUS, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say they’re seeking information from the public after two puppies were found dead inside a crate that was left beside a rural road in the Finger Lakes region.

The Country Acres Animal Shelter in Homer in Cortland County says the puppies were found around 2 p.m. Tuesday along a road in the town of Sempronius, in neighboring Cayuga County 25 miles southwest of Syracuse.

The dogs were taken to Cornell University in Ithaca for necropsies.

Officials say there’s evidence that the dogs were still alive when placed in the pet crate. A bowl and a sweatshirt were found inside the crate. It’s unclear how long it was beside the road before authorities were alerted.

The dogs were believed to be shepherd mixes between 12 and 15 week sold.
