BAY VIEW GARDENS, Ill. (AP) - Authorities say a suspect in a robbery and fatal shooting at a gas station outside Peoria has killed himself in a confrontation with officers.

The (Peoria) Journal Star (https://bit.ly/1aNWUJy) reports Woodford County Coroner Tim Ruestman said Wednesday that 48-year-old Robert McGrane died from a single self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

Authorities had earlier reported that a law enforcement officer shot and killed McGrane during the confrontation Tuesday evening after officers converged on a rural Woodford County property where he was spotted. McGrane was seen trying to enter an abandoned house on the property owned by a family member.

An autopsy says McGrane had no other gunshot wounds aside from the one he fired, though Woodford County Sheriff’s Office said law enforcement fired shots in the confrontation. Sheriff Matt Smith couldn’t say whether the shots were fired before or after McGrane shot himself.

Gas station attendant Rajesh Madala was shot and killed Monday during the robbery in Bay View Gardens. Officials said they got an overwhelming number of tips in the hours after Madala’s death.
