PHOENIX (AP) - Road work on State Route 87 between Payson and Fountain Hills is expected to slow traffic for at least the next two weeks.

The anticipated delays announced by the Arizona Department of Transportation are due to a safety improvement project south of Payson and north of the community of Sunflower.

Delays of up to 30 minutes are expected beginning on Thursday as southbound traffic is shifted on to the northbound lanes, leaving just one lane in each direction. Wide loads are being banned during the project.

The goal of the $6.2 million project about 8 miles south of the State Route 188 junction is to reconfigure a major curve and build a new truck escape ramp.

ADOT expects the entire project to be completed by the end of May
