SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - The Santa Fe City Council has voted to ban the sale of miniatures and other single-serving bottles of alcohol within the city limits - a move that could prompt a lawsuit challenging the local ban.

The council approved the ban on a 6-2 vote Wednesday night.

Supporters said the measure would combat a litter and nuisance problem, but a lawyer for several liquor store owners said it’s actually an attempt to regulate the sale of liquor in violation of state law.

Attorney Mark Basham said a lawsuit is likely.

The ordinance is set to take effect in six months.
