BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - A South Burlington police lieutenant has pleaded guilty to a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol.

When he appeared in court Thursday following his arrest last month, the attorney for 47-year-old Lt. Jeffrey Martel of Colchester handed the judge a plea agreement.

The Burlington Free Press (https://bfpne.ws/1aaAMYH ) reports Martel was ordered to pay $652 in fines and surcharges and his license will be suspended for 90 days.

In a statement, South Burlington Police Chief Trevor Whipple called Martel’s actions “very disappointing,” but by pleading guilty, Martel took responsibility for his actions.

Martel was charged last month after he crashed his car in Colchester.

He is on paid administrative leave from his job.

Whipple says a decision will be made soon about what discipline Martel will receive.
