CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Authorities say a Charleston police officer is dead after he barricaded himself inside his house.

Local media outlets report Chief Greg Mullen said Sgt. George Hildebidle took his own life Thursday.

Police spokesman Charles Francis said officers were dispatched to look into a domestic situation. Francis said when police found out an officer was inside with a gun, they called in the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office. The sheriff’s office said several nearby houses were evacuated.

Authorities reported that the person inside the home was alone, refusing to come out and was armed. Mullen said shortly after noon, a sheriff’s office SWAT team entered the home and found Hildebidle’s body.

Hildebidle had been on the Charleston police force since 2003.
