MURRIETA, Calif. (AP) - A Riverside County man has pleaded guilty to raping and killing a young mother and then setting her house on fire while her 3-year-old son slept.
Marquise Denzell McGlown of Hemet pleaded guilty Friday to all the charges against him, including murder, in a deal he made with prosecutors in order to avoid the death penalty.
The Press-Enterprise reports (https://bit.ly/1LWEYKS ) that the 25-year-old McGlown will be sentenced to life in prison without parole at a hearing set for Friday.
Prosecutors originally sought the death penalty in the case, which had been set for trial in September.
McGlown admitted to raping and killing 23-year-old Shanae Wesley on Halloween in 2012 after a mutual friend introduced them. A neighbor rescued Wesley’s sleeping son after McGlown set fire to her Murrieta apartment.
