PORTSMOUTH, R.I. (AP) - The body of a 12-year-old boy missing since he was swimming with family members Friday afternoon has been found in waters off Portsmouth.

Department of Environmental Management spokeswoman Gail Mastrati said his body was found at about 9:30 a.m. Saturday.

The Portsmouth Fire Department, which led the search, said divers from the East Greenwich department found the boy in about 25 feet of water, about 80 feet offshore.

Mastrati said the boy was from Providence.

His father reported him missing at about 5:30 p.m. Friday in the Blue Bill Cove area. The father said the boy suddenly went into deep water and slipped below the surface. Family members tried to rescue him.

Officials say the water deepens sharply about 15 yards from shore in the cove, which is known more for fishing.

This story has been corrected to show the boy’s age is 12 years old, not 11.
