MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Montgomery police are investigating after a car was discovered submerged in a lake — but how it got there is a mystery.

Montgomery Fire/Rescue officials said that sheriff’s deputies were alerted to the black Nissan Maxima around 6:30 a.m. Monday, and a dive team was called to the site near the Barrington Place Apartments.

Authorities said in a statement that the car was submerged up to the trunk, with the passenger door open.

Officials say there was heavy dew on the ground and vehicle tracks leading into the water, but no footprints leading out. A shoe was found floating nearby.

Authorities said members of the dive team Monday morning were walking the shallow water near shore in an attempt to rule out the possibility of someone being in the water.
