GILBERT, Ariz. (AP) - Police in Gilbert have identified a man fatally shot after a traffic stop.
They say a motorcycle officer stopped a car driven by 24-year-old Richard Tyler Young for speeding in a school zone about 9:30 a.m. Monday.
Young pulled his vehicle into a church parking lot with the car’s front facing a block wall.
While writing the citation, the officer saw Young making suspicious movements inside the vehicle.
As he approached the driver’s side, the officer says Young put the car into reverse - knocking the officer to the ground and striking his motorcycle.
The officer says Young then accelerated his car toward him. The policeman feared for his life and opened fire.
Young was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Police say they’re investigating the shooting.
