PITTSBURGH (AP) - About 100 people have marched in protest of the timing of the Fraternal Order of Police convention in Pittsburgh, which opened on the anniversary of the fatal shooting of a black 18-year-old by a white police officer in Ferguson, Missouri.

Doug Connor is a member of the New Afrikan Independence Party, which organized Sunday’s protest. He calls the timing of the convention insensitive and says he would have thought one of the group’s 300,000 members would have brought it to the organization’s attention.

The group’s national president says that there was no disrespect intended and that the conventions are scheduled four years in advance.

But Nation of Islam member Aamir Muhammad wasn’t satisfied. He says, “The Fraternal Order of Police has come into our city at the wrong, inappropriate time.”
