CLEVELAND (AP) - Records show that a man shot and wounded by a Cleveland police officer got out of prison June 30 after serving more than six years for aggravated robbery.
A Cleveland police spokeswoman has identified the man shot early Tuesday as 28-year-old Justin Damato. He is hospitalized with wounds to the hip and abdomen.
Police say the shooting occurred around 4 a.m. on the city’s west side after officers stopped a sports utility vehicle driving erratically with its headlights turned off. Police say Damato bailed out of the SUV, prompting a foot chase. Police say one of the officers fired several shots when Damato turned toward him holding a handgun.
The SUV was taken in an armed robbery hours earlier. The chase and shooting were recorded on police body cameras.
