CASCO, Maine (AP) - Police say a 4-year-old child was killed and his mother and the driver were seriously injured in a traffic crash in Casco, Maine.

Capt. Donald Goulet of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office said a car traveling west on Poland Spring Road went out of control after passing another vehicle, crossed the center line and struck a pole, splitting the vehicle.

Goulet said the impact ejected Cameron Peterson, who was pronounced dead at the scene. It was unclear if he was in a child safety seat.

Goulet said the driver, 28-year-old Michael Minson of Gray, Maine, was hospitalized with serious injuries. The boy’s mother, 27-year-old Crystal Peterson of Gray, was taken to Central Maine Medical Center with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
