JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - The state Court of Appeals has upheld the life sentence given a man convicted of murder in the 2011 death of his wife.

Court records show a Jasper County jury convicted Shannon L. Rayner in 2013 in the death Sonya Hunt Rayner at his family’s home in Bay Springs.

Prosecutors say Sonya Rayner died of blunt force trauma and the house set on fire. Shannon Rayner escaped from the fire but his wife did not. Her body was found in the house, which also was used as a deer camp.

Prosecutors say the couple lived in Madison County but were visiting over Valentine’s Day in Bay Springs.

The Appeals Court on Tuesday denied Rayner’s argument that prosecutors didn’t prove his guilt. The court says there was sufficient to convict Rayner.
