PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Police say an 8-year-old was hospitalized after shooting himself in the foot with a gun he found in a Philadelphia playground.

But Chief Inspector Scott Small tells The Philadelphia Inquirer (https://bit.ly/1L7JGHf ) that no gun was immediately found and no witnesses could be located outside the East Germantown Recreation Center.

Police were notified shortly after 5 p.m. that the boy was brought to Einstein Medical Center by his family with a gunshot wound to his left foot.

Small says the family told officers the boy discovered a bag with a gun inside and accidentally shot himself.

Police secured a house on North 21st Street where the boy was initially taken and a second location for possible warrants in search of the gun.
