MIDDLEBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) - State police have charged a Boston man they say crashed his car into a tow truck driver as he was helping a motorist on Interstate 495 over the weekend.

Police say 29-year-old David Mascarenhas was charged Wednesday with negligent operation of a motor vehicle, failure to change lane for an emergency vehicle and related offenses.

The 33-year-old tow truck driver was stopped along the highway in Middleborough when he and the disabled car were hit by a Honda Civic around 12:30 a.m. Sunday. The Wareham man is in critical condition.

Tow truck drivers from throughout the region will be rallying at the Brockton Fairgrounds on Sunday to raise money for the man’s medical bills.

It’s unclear if Mascarenhas has an attorney.
