EAST GREENWICH, R.I. (AP) - A former member of the East Greenwich School Committee is facing charges after a woman who lives in her van said he shouted obscenities at her and smashed her window.

The 50-year-old woman told police she was sleeping in the van when an intoxicated man began screaming at her and told her the parking lot was not a homeless shelter. She says he broke the window and drove away.

John Sommer was arrested early Saturday and charged with driving under the influence, disorderly conduct, vandalism, and refusing to submit to a chemical test.

The 46-year-old Sommer was elected to the school committee in 2010. He lost the position in 2014.

He is due back in Warwick District Court on Friday.

Sommer has not responded to WPRI-TV’s request for comment.
