HOLLIS, Okla. (AP) - A former teacher in southwestern Oklahoma has been sentenced to 10 years in prison following a conviction for having sex with a student.

A Harmon County district judge sentenced Jennifer Caswell on Wednesday to 15 years in prison with 5 years suspended on each of six crimes involving sex with a 15-year-old boy. The sentences are to run at the same time, The Oklahoma (https://bit.ly/1DPTcMr ) reported.

In June, 29-year-old Caswell pleaded guilty to three counts of second-degree rape, two counts of enticing a child and one count of forcible sodomy. She resigned as a middle school English teacher in April 2014.

Because of statutory minimums, Caswell won’t become eligible for release for at least 8.5 years.

“I can’t say that we had ever considered it being that harsh,” said Hollis attorney David Cummins. “It (the sentence) was somewhere in the neighborhood of at least twice what we anticipated.”

Some Oklahoma educators facing similar crimes have received shorter sentences.

Former teacher Kalyn Thompson was given one year in prison for the second-degree rape of a student. Thompson was a 25-year-old English teacher when the crime occurred.

Former Western Heights Public Schools teacher and coach Tyrone Nash, 36, is serving two years in prison for a 2014 conviction of five counts of second-degree rape and five counts of forcible sodomy with a 17-year-old girl.
