METAIRIE, La. (AP) - A Metairie man has been charged with committing a hate crime after being accused of removing signage from a Metairie abortion clinic.
Multiple media outlets report that 27-year-old William Kennedy was arrested last week in connection with the Aug. 1 removal of a sign from the Causeway Medical Clinic.
According to a Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office arrest report, surveillance footage shows a man pulling metal lettering off the building early in the morning.
In addition to the hate crime charge, Kennedy, who has since been released on bond, faces one count of simple criminal damage to property. It is unclear if he has an attorney.
Tulane University Law School professor Katherine Mattes tells the Times-Picayune (https://bit.ly/1Ns74wu ) that if convicted on both counts, Kennedy could face up to six months in prison.
